Starting Out in Public Relations: The Part Nobody Talks About

By Melissa Nyamushanya

When people think about public relations, they often picture red carpets, media interviews, press conferences, and polished executives delivering perfect messages. What they do not see are the countless hours spent building credibility before anyone knows your name. As a new public relations professional, one of the hardest lessons I learned is that expertise and opportunity do not always arrive at the same time.

You can have the education.

You can have the skills.

You can have the strategy.

But if nobody knows you exist, it can feel like you are shouting into the void.

The Reality of Starting from Scratch

Every established communications professional started somewhere.

Before the media placements.

Before the client roster.

Before the impressive LinkedIn profile.

There were unanswered emails, ignored proposals, low engagement posts, and moments of wondering whether the effort was worth it.

The truth is that public relations is a profession built on trust.

Trust takes time to build.

Clients are not simply investing in a service. They are investing in someone they believe can protect and elevate their reputation.

As a new PR professional, that can be intimidating.

How do you convince someone to trust you when you are still building your portfolio?

The answer is simple, but not easy:

You keep showing up.

Building Credibility Before You Feel Ready

One of the biggest mistakes many new professionals make is waiting until they feel “qualified enough” before putting themselves out there.

I did not have every answer when I started.

What I did have was a willingness to learn, volunteer, network, and create opportunities for myself.

Every event attended.

Every article written.

Every social media post published.

Every community initiative supported.

Those moments become part of your professional story.

The experience adds up.

The relationships add up.

The credibility adds up.

Rejection Is Part of the Process

If you are entering the communications industry, prepare yourself for rejection.

Not every pitch will land.

Not every client will say yes.

Not every opportunity will work out.

That does not mean you are failing.

It means you are participating.

The professionals we admire most are often the ones who have heard “no” hundreds of times before receiving the opportunity that changed everything.

Persistence is a professional skill.

Why Representation Matters

As a Black woman in communications, I understand the importance of representation in this industry.

Many professionals from underrepresented communities enter spaces where they do not always see themselves reflected in leadership.

That can create additional challenges.

It can also create purpose.

Our stories matter.

Our communities matter.

Our perspectives matter.

The communications industry becomes stronger when more voices are included in shaping conversations and influencing public narratives.

Building SheGaze Media Inc.

Starting SheGaze Media Inc. was never just about launching another agency.

It was about creating a communications firm rooted in trust, strategy, and authenticity.

There are still challenges.

There are still days when growth feels slower than expected.

There are still moments that require faith, resilience, and patience.

But entrepreneurship has taught me that success is rarely built overnight.

It is built through consistency.

One conversation at a time.

One client at a time.

One opportunity at a time.

For the New PR Professional

If you are just beginning your journey in public relations, keep going.

The late nights matter.

The volunteer experience matters.

The networking events matter.

The portfolio you are building matters.

Most importantly, your voice matters.

Do not compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.

Stay committed to learning.

Stay committed to serving people well.

Stay committed to building trust.

Your reputation is being built long before your success becomes visible.

And one day, the work you are doing today will become the foundation of the career you have been working toward all along.

At SheGaze Media Inc., we believe communication is more than visibility. It is how trust is built, how leadership is demonstrated, and how organizations shape their reputation over time.
